Situated at 1000 m altitude, the six villages of the Bucium commune are laying on the Nord-West slope of the Meridional Carpathians, in the South of Apuseni Mountains (in the Metaliferi Mountains ). The distance between Bucium and the important towns in the area: 70 km to Alba Iulia, 40 km to Brad, 3 km to Abrud and 8 km to Campeni.

Like the folklorist Ion Pop-Reteganul said, Detunata is „...a peak of bazalt stone, composed by huge prisms, which stand straight up, like some giant trees, one next to the other, in the Abrud Mountains, at North – West of Bucium Sasa.” There are two Detunate, situated at 1 km away from each other. These are columns of basalt with an amazing regularity, resembling a huge natural organ.

Detunata Golaşa and Detunata Flocoasa (24 and 5 hectares) form an unique geological reservation, remarkable by the presence of hexagonal columnar basalt. Detunata Flocoasa (Hairy) is named after the spruce fir forest that covers it. Detunata Goala (Naked) is partially forestless. Detunatele are the main attraction of the area. Detunata Golasa (1168 m high) and Detunata Flocoasa (1265 m high) appear even higher because of the vertical character of their position. Once up, a beautiful scenery opens out in front of your eyes: Gaina Peak , Muntele Mare, Negrileasa, Vulcan.
